- OBD-I... why use it?

People ask why we prefer to use GMs OBD-I engine control system on our conversions.

Just a few reasons:

Well proven system

Very powerful compared to many aftermarket EFI systems

ALDL interface for diagnostics

Less wiring and sensors to install and diagnose. (No secondary crank, cam or MAF sensors)

Tuning is stored on a chip that can be moved to a replacement ECM

Replacement ECMs are easy to find in the event of a failure. Just move your chip to the new ECM and you're on the road again. OBD-II ECMs with special tunes must be reflashed before you can use them. Not too handy when you break down in the middle of nowhere.

Easily tuned with a small initial investment (TunerPro software, interface cable, chip burner and your laptop)

Realtime tuning can be performed using an emulator

Multiple chips (tunes) can be kept on hand and installed for different needs. Example would be a daily driver tune for pump gas and a track tune for use with racing fuel. Hardware is even available to have two tunes on one chip that is selectable via a toggle switch. Such a setup could also be used for valet mode or as a speed/rpm limiter for an inexperienced driver.
